Feast of St. Francis of Assisi
In 1856 our ancestors built the Chapel in Hiadeľ and dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi. Unfortunately, the chapel was too small and some villagers that wanted to attend Mass had to commute on foot to the neighboring village Moštenica. In 1990 our villagers decided to build themselves a church in Hiadeľ. A corner-stone of the church was consecrated by Pope John Paul ll in Bratislava in 1990. In 1995 the church itself was also consecrated and (like the chapel) was dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi.
Many Catholics worldwide celebrate the Feast of St Francis of Assisi on October 4 each year. The feast commemorates the life of St Francis, who was born in the 12th century and is the Catholic Church's patron saint of animals and the environment. In Hiadeľ, the Feast of St. Franciss of Assisi begins with Mass attended by many villagers and their family members, even those who don´t live in Hiadeľ anymore, but come back just for this event. After the Mass, there is a gathering in the back of the church with small agape (feast).
In 2015, we celebrated 20th anniversary of the consecration of our church and on this occasion as a part of the feast, children from local folk groups prepared a little performance for all the attendees.
